As new or expecting parent(s), End Hunger Connecticut! is here to help you make the process of applying for SNAP as stress-free as possible. Below you will read frequently asked questions from parents about the SNAP process as you prepare to apply. You can also download these questions as a PDF here (available in English and Spanish). When you’re ready, we invite you to take our SNAP Prescreener, a quick way to determine if you are eligible to receive SNAP benefits. Our new feature allows you to set up an appointment over the phone with our EHC! Call Center. However, the callback is not the only option, and you will have other options on how to proceed if you are eligible for SNAP upon completing the prescreener.
How do I know if I am eligible for SNAP?
Your household must meet certain income requirements to be eligible for SNAP. Every family’s financial situation is different. A good first step is to visit endhungerct.org/prescreener or call us at 866-974-7627.
Does SNAP help me access other programs?
Being on SNAP makes your child automatically eligible for free school meals at school. It also makes your household eligible to enroll in programs such WIC, Headstart and CT Energy Assistance.
Can I use SNAP to buy formula for my baby?
Yes, you can use SNAP to purchase baby formula and baby food. SNAP cannot be used on non-food items like medicine or diapers.
If I am homeless, can I apply for SNAP benefits?
Yes, you can still apply for SNAP benefits if you’re homeless and/or staying in a shelter.
What if I am already receiving SNAP and just had my baby?
Once your baby is born you can add your baby to your SNAP case using their crib sheet as verification.
What if first-time mothers are not receiving SNAP benefits?
First time mothers over the age of 22 who live with their parents are eligible to apply if they are responsible for buying and preparing their own meals. Those under the age of 22 MUST apply as a full family unit if living with their parents.
Can my child qualify for SNAP benefits even if I am a non-citizen?
If the child is born in the US, yes you can apply on behalf of your child.
